NM-OLD IRVING PARK ADVANCED OUTPATIENT CENTER

Ujamaa Construction (“UJAMAA”) was selected as part of the team to build Northwestern Medicine’s new Advanced Outpatient Center is the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago. Having a breadth of experience in the Chicago market with healthcare, this project was a natural fit for the UJAMAA team and our Joint Venture partners at Power Construction.

The Old Irving Park Advanced Outpatient Center (“AOC”) houses over 322,000 sq ft of medical space including an immediate care center, imaging department with CT, MRI and x-ray, oncology suite, infusion center and cardiology. The AOC is supported by two levels of below-grade and two partial levels of above-grade, cast-in-place garage space, and the structural steel programmed space, providing more flexibility for future upgrades or layout changes. The facade will be made up of a limestone feature wall to the north with glass and metal panel that wraps along the east and west faces. The south wall will overlook the adjacent alley and will be made up of a combination of metal panel and terra cotta.

The team implemented several strategies to minimize community disruptions. While digging the earth retention system, cross bracing was added to the corners and along the southern alleyway to eliminate disruptions to the adjacent properties. Six different configurations of modular exam rooms were prefabricated off-site, improving the quality control process through the use of mock-ups and reducing the number of material deliveries to the site. Beyond project approach, the project team also provided weekly updates to the community through the alderman’s office and has a hot line set up
