Breaking Barriers and Building Futures: Celebrating Women’s History Month at UJAMAA Construction

Date

At UJAMAA Construction, we believe that diversity is our strength. As a company, we are committed to creating a workplace culture that supports and empowers women in construction. That’s why we’re proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and the many contributions that women have made to our industry.

Women have been historically underrepresented in the construction industry, but that is changing. More and more women are entering the field and breaking down barriers, bringing a diverse set of skills and perspectives to the table. We believe that this diversity is essential to our success as a company and as an industry.

At UJAMAA Construction, we are committed to providing equal opportunities to all of our employees, regardless of gender. We recognize that women in construction often face unique challenges, but we are dedicated to supporting them and helping them to thrive. We believe that by creating a workplace culture that values diversity and inclusivity, we can create a better future for all of us.

We also believe that it’s important for women to see other women succeeding in male-dominated fields. By celebrating the accomplishments of women in construction, we can inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in the industry. We are proud to have so many talented and dedicated women on our team, and we are committed to continuing to support and empower them.

As we wind down the celebrations of Women’s History Month, we want to take a moment to hear from some of the women on our team about their experiences in construction:

Chakeya Ward
Senior Project Accountant

What does it mean to you to be a woman in construction?

It’s empowering. It’s something I had never thought about and a different world to me. It is amazing to see so many women in powerful positions in this male-dominated industry laying the groundwork for the next generation of women builders. It’s truly inspiring to be able to witness women leaving their mark in this industry.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

It helps me to see all the pathways that have been laid before us by our ancestors and how it is possible to achieve anything as a woman. It is also a reminder of where we came from and where we are going.

Sandra McCoy
Administrative Manager

What does it mean to you to be a woman in construction?

To me being in a woman in construction means being a part of and accepted in a man-dominated profession. It means setting the blueprint and path for future women entering this field so that they have a place where they can be equally productive as their male counterparts and team members.  It means having the same opportunity of pride when structures are built and renovated knowing that I had a part in making it happen.  Looking around the great neighborhoods of Chicago at the buildings and facilities feeling that sense of pride that I played a part in the advancement and endless opportunities in the various communities that presents itself because of UJAMAA’s work in that particular area.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

Women’s History Month to me means a time where women can highlight and showcase their talents and abilities in various fields exhibiting the hard work and sacrifices they have made to achieve their current goals.  Whether it be entrepreneurship, part of a 9-5 team, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, wife, companion, friend, whatever the role may be, a time where we as women can shine and support each other.  It means a time of reflection as a woman, self-care and motivation to get to that next level.

What does it mean to you to be a woman in construction?
To be a woman in construction means the world is continuously shifting into a realm of equality. For the past 10 years I’ve worked in predominantly male fields and to see more women venture out, specifically into Construction is removing the boundaries/limitations placed on women in the workforce. We make a difference and deserve to work in any field.
