Construction Safety Week 2022

Date

UJAMAA Construction takes safety very seriously. It is an important part of our industry but also, it is ingrained in our DNA. Acute attention to safety ensures that people go home at the end of the day and that is part of caring. As we continue to care for our teams, we also continue to put safety at the forefront.

As Construction Safety Week starts to wines down, we want to highlight two of our safety professional: Vice President and Director of Corporate Safety Ronald Lewis and Assistant Project Manager and Safety Manager Malik Harmon. These two make sure UJAMAA is at the cutting edge safety training to ensure that our team members make it home in one piece every day.

As we continue to celebrate Construction Safety Week, we want to highlight our Vice President and Director of Corporate Safety Ron Lewis.

Why Construction?

My father was a carpenter. I saw how much joy and satisfaction he derived from his work. I would accompany him on the weekends and the summer months. At first it was just to earn money, but it became much more. I learned by example how one person can create a better life for others by being good at their craft. My father is my why of construction.

Why UJAMAA?

UJAMAA’s purpose is much greater than the actual construction of any project. Our culture is to help others reach a greater potential. It is not only our responsibility, but also our privilege to assist others in rising to the next level. I have been very fortunate in my career. A person more senior than myself has always pointed to me to put me in position to rise to the next level. I am well aware my journey has been greatly assisted by others. It is my privilege to pay it forward. UJAMAA makes it easy to leave a great legacy in the construction industry.

What is the importance of safety in Construction to you?

Safety is important to me because I care about the people on our projects. If you spend ten minutes talking to anyone on a jobsite, I am certain you will find many things in common. The more you learn about people, you have a greater incentive for them to go home without injury. A workplace injury not only affects the person’s immediate family, but has a great ripple effect on all areas of their lives. Keeping people safe on a jobsite is much greater than meeting requirements, it is a moral obligation.

Why Construction?

Construction has always intrigued me as the thought of being part of a team that puts things together that will be a lasting piece of the community footprint drives me. My construction interest landed me in the trades as a labor (which I did for 11 years) and that experience pushed me to want to go further in my career advancement. I then enrolled myself into college and obtained an Associates Degree in AutoCAD and a Bachelors Degree in Construction Management.

Why UJAMAA?

The name peaked my interest as I watched UJAMAA build at multiple sites in my earlier years as a laborer. The brand grabbed me when I researched and found that UJAMAA’s mission stands for rebuilding our communities one block at a time which I bought into as I too stand firmly on this statement.

What is the importance of safety in Construction to you?

Safety is the most important aspect of construction as it encompasses working in a manner that gets the job done in a fashion that gets everyone back to their love ones in one piece and without entertaining the thought of working in environments that may cause physical or medical issues in the future of a person’s life.

Why Construction?

Everyone growing up passes a place in the town or state they live in sees a building or road that needs some “TLC.” As an adult you have doors open for you where you learn you can be apart of the change that happens to that road, building, or empty field that is called being in construction.

Why UJAMAA?

The reason why I chose to work for UJAMAA is the team effort that takes place on every job I have been a part of as well as the respect everyone holds for each other.
