Project Engineer Tumwi Promotes Opportunities For Women In Construction

Date

UJAMAA Construction is dedicated to advancing women in construction. Recently, project engineer Tumwitikege Mwakalinga spoke to a group of students at Illinois Institute of Technology about alternative careers in architecture. Here are her words:

“I am on a journey to create exposure for black women in construction. When I was that age (college age), I needed someone that can tell me what career options I had. I joined UJAMAA Construction because of how they are empowering and giving exposure to women in construction management. I also appreciate how UJAMAA works with organizations like Revolution WorkshopHIRE360 Chicago, and Inner-city Muslim Action Network. I see that as UJAMAA planting seeds to help the next generation of construction workers and managers from early on in their career development. This is vital in an industry where women only make up a small percentage of the workforce.”

Tumwi’s, as we call her, words are a testament to the culture of UJAMAA Construction. If you are interested in joining a company with a strong culture of promoting women and diversity in the construction industry, visit our careers page here. We’re hiring!!!
