UIC MILE SQUARE HEALTH CENTER
UJAMAA Construction (“UJAMAA”) in partnership with Wisconsin-based Hammes Company, has completed construction management services for the new 5-story, 121,750SQFT ambulatory care Mile Square Health Center located within the Illinois Medical District in Chicago, Illinois.
The new five-story healthcare facility includes an urgent care clinic, diagnostic imagine, pharmacy, medical laboratory, administration space and an expansive lobby on the first floor. The second-floor space features a physician’s family practice, numerous patient examination rooms, mental health room and tele-health rooms. The upper floors will remain shell space until tenants are assigned.
The work also included a 112-vehicle permeable paver parking lot and additional site work. This healthcare facility has is a LEED Gold certification. The composite metal wall panels that envelop the building take advantage of daylight to warm and light the interior spaces. Energy-efficient lighting fixtures and control switches minimize the use of electricity. The third floor features a 3,326-square-foot balcony covered in a variety of plantings to serve as a partial green roof, helping to manage storm water. Light-colored permeable pavers in the building’s parking lot help prevent rain from entering the city’s combined sewer and storm water system and reduce the “heat-island effect” produced by dark-colored parking lots that absorb and emit heat. Energy-efficient air handling units, a gas-fired boiler, cooling and energy recovery systems, and high-quality air filters also contributed to the LEED Gold certification among many other features.
