A Memorable Day of Inspiration and Learning

UJAMAA Construction recently hosted a remarkable day on-site at Park Station, inviting the Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program and an enthusiastic group of young ladies from Shoop Elementary to explore one of our latest projects in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Led by the inspiring Project Manager Jasmine Redmond-Winston, Project Engineer CeMara Adams, and Senior Superintendent Carlos Hemphill, this visit demonstrated the transformative power of mentoring and its role in promoting diverse talent within the construction industry.

The Role of Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program in Empowering Young Girls

The Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring Program is dedicated to empowering young girls through mentorship and skill-building, preparing them for successful careers across various fields. By collaborating with organizations like UJAMAA Construction, they provide invaluable experiences that inspire and motivate these young girls to explore different career paths, including construction and community development.

During their visit, the young girls had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of construction, project management, and community development. This hands-on experience not only provided valuable insights but also allowed them to witness the impact of their work on their communities. Furthermore, it sparked their curiosity and encouraged them to ask questions, laying the foundation for a deeper understanding of the industry.

Mentoring: The Key to Fostering Representation in the Construction Industry

It’s crucial for young girls and people of color to see themselves in leadership roles, building within their own communities. By exposing these young ladies to successful professionals like Jasmine, who share their background, they are inspired to envision their future in the industry and break down barriers that may have deterred them from pursuing such careers.

Mentoring plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of trailblazers in construction and community development. By providing these young girls with opportunities to learn from industry professionals, we’re helping to create a more diverse and inclusive construction workforce. Moreover, mentoring fosters confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self-belief, enabling these young girls to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams.

The Lasting Impact of Mentoring on Young Girls’ Career Path

During the site visit, the young girls had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and learn about their career journeys. These personal stories served as a source of inspiration, allowing the young girls to see the potential for growth and achievement in the construction field. Moreover, it instilled in them the importance of mentorship, as they witnessed firsthand the positive impact it has on both personal and professional development.

By participating in these mentoring activities, young girls can explore various aspects of the construction industry, such as project management, engineering, and trade skills. Exposure to diverse roles and responsibilities helps students develop a deeper understanding of the industry, allowing them to make more informed choices about their career paths.
