CHATHAM MARKET
Ujamaa Construction (“UJAMAA”) provided the demolition, infrastructure and redevelopment services for Chatham Market, a 50-acre brownfield site located in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.
The initial assignment included mass grading, storm detention systems, site lighting, paving and the construction of two 10,000 Sq Ft core and shell retail buildings. UJAMAA constructed an additional 20,000 Sq Ft space in phase two of the master development that served as the first LEED-certified core and shell retail building on the USGBC green registry.
Unforeseen soil conditions required extensive remediation efforts that impacted the schedule. The UJAMAA project team overcame the environmental delays to meet the Owner’s original completion date for the infrastructure phase.
To date, UJAMAA has constructed the Wal-Mart Supercenter, ALDI Food Market, Bank of America, Potbelly’s Sandwich Works and the Wal- Mart Express within the Chatham Market. UJAMAA also engaged in community outreach and workforce development efforts through the local high school giving the students a chance to see themselves as future construction professional.
